Poodle Dog...No Joke.

If you plan to mountain bike on some of the newly re opened trails in the Angeles National Forest be on the lookout for a beautiful looking plant lovingly called "Poodle Dog bush" or Turricula parryi. This lavender flowered plant is thriving in large parts of the station fire burn areas and packs a nasty punch. Skin contact with this plant can cause contact dermatitis with a rash, swelling and terrible itching. A large number of the crew at Montrose Bike Shop found this out the hard way so you'll have to take our word for it or read some of the countless other news articles about this new danger in our forest.

Poodle dog bush is most common at about 5000 feet and above, where a lot of the burn area is located. It has been reported in large amounts around the popular Charlton and Chilao area as well as the upper Arroyo Seco near Red Box and the West Fork San Gabriel river below Red Box. it is by no means limited to these areas so please be careful, do not touch it or go anywhere near it if possible.

If despite your best efforts you still manage to make contact with the poodle dog be ready for symptoms to appear within 2 to 5 days followed by a terrible itch, redness, rash and swelling. My particular case lasted about two weeks and included a trip to kaiser for help with the swelling. I thought it was poison oak as did the Doctor. It does not ooze like poison oak does however. Some experts believe this plant will die off within two to three years. Lucky us.

As we get ready to launch our 2012 line to you—which is packed with amazing bikes and equipment—we are also super excited to give you sneak peek at a bike that will be ridden by some of the biggest names in cycling on the grandest stage.

Come July 2^nd, select riders from teams HTC-Highroad, Astana, and Saxo Bank-SunGard will race the Tour de France on the next generation of Tarmac: the SL4. This pure race bike is the culmination of everything we’ve learned to date about working hand-in-hand with pros: taking their insight and putting it to use designing the fastest bikes in the pro peloton, without sacrificing the ride quality we all demand.

The Tarmac SL4 is the stiffest frame and complete module in the industry (torsional), and by far the stiffest and lightest Tarmac we’ve ever made, resulting in a lightning-fast machine. But, while improving on those numbers, we’ve also managed to improve vertical compliance to maintain the legendary Tarmac ride quality. We all know it’s not just the numbers, but how balanced the ride is—that is our magic. If you ask the pro riders who have racked up thousands of miles and hundreds of wins on Tarmacs over the years, they would agree. Thanks to them we’ve proven our idea that Smoother is Faster.

We’re super excited for you to experience the SL4 for yourselves—and of course to see it start winning races! We’re equally excited that riders will still be able to enjoy our race-proven SL3 frames, which won last year’s Tour. This is still the bike-of-choice for most of our riders in this year’s race, and will continue through model year 2012.

In fact the SL3 could win its second Tour de France, as reigning champ Alberto Contador will ride the same SL3 he rode to victory in the this year’s Giro—he’s a superstitious rider and wouldn’t even ride a special pink SL3 frame built for him during the Giro!

With the addition of the SL4, our already-unparalleled quiver of race bikes gets one stronger: It joins the SL3, Venge, Roubaix, and Shiv to make by far the most dominant and diverse collection of race bikes in the industry.

I am passionate about continually investing and innovating - not only to stimulate the riders and help them ride farther faster, but to support you and give you the tools to grow your business well into the future. Trek Bicycle: Great Bikes and Environmentally Conscious

The fact is you can recycle pretty much everything. From appliances to eyeglasses, almost everything can find second life as a new material or be reused as something similar.

Trek Bicycle announced in April that it will start full-scale scrap carbon fiber recycling at its Waterloo, Wisc. manufacturing facility, giving new life to a material that was once just discarded.

Carbon fiber is used frequently for frames because it’s affordable, lightweight and strong, but many other components are carbon fiber-based as well.

Trimmings from parts as well as accepted warranty frames are collected and shipped to Material Innovations Technologies in South Carolina. The carbon fiber is then reclaimed and used for a wide range of new applications in recreation, automotive, medical and aerospace.

Trek already partners with Alchemy Goods to recycle tire tubes, which are one of the most commonly replaced bike parts. Trek dealer stores send tire tubes to Alchemy, which uses the material to make Bontrager bags.

Specialized Updates its Saphire Womens Bike in 2011

Specialized has had an extensive women's range for several years, and there are several developments for 2011. First, there's an all-new Safire full-suspension bike. To improve performance, the Safire has moved to the shock position found on the Epic and Stumpjumper FSR, with the shock oriented in line with the seatstays.

That presented a conflict with a desire for lower standover height, but one that was neatly solved by mounting the shock in a forged pocket midway along the top tube. By tucking the shock up inside the top tube, standover height is claimed to be the lowest of any 120mm bike. The revised rear suspension is optimized for the lower shock pressures used by typically lighter women riders, with different rate curves compared to Specialized's men's bikes.

The Safire's cunning top tube construction is also found on the 100mm-travel Myka FSR. Specialized's ever-expanding 29er range extends to women's bikes too, with a 29er Myka hardtail that, impressively, comes in a range of sizes to fit riders from just 5ft tall.

2011 Specialized Allez Comp Gets a Makeover

One of the most exciting bikes shown at Keystone this year was the well-known Allez. which has been completely redesigned for 2011.

Like the Secteur aligns to the Roubaix, the aluminum Allez now aligns to the Tarmac. The geometry is identical to the Tarmac, which makes it an ideal entry level race bike.

Stiffness has been emphasized on the Allez so it should tackle road races and criteriums with equal aplomb. Its stiffness to weight ratio has been increased by 20% compared to the current model Allez, and while it's not at the level of the Tarmac SL3, it's not far off.

There are two versions of the frame: the top level E5 and the A1, which is 75g heavier than the E5.
The E5 features a 1 1/8" to 1 1/2" tapered head tube, while the A1 has a straight 1 1/8". Both frames have the Tarmac-like triangular seat stays, raised bearing placement in the fork, oversized chain stays and a braze-on rather than clamp-on front derailleur to help increase bottom bracket stiffness.

Most importantly, it's been ridden to victory in Specialized's famous Friday afternoon lunch ride, a world championship for those who take part.

From the beginning, Tahoe has been a magnet, a liquid plane that pulled, and called, and drew from its blue edges all species of fascinations.

People have come from everywhere — first the Washoe tribes, then European foreigners who evolved into “locals,” who then built homes and lodges just in time to witness the birth of the ever-absent and ever-present second homeowner. From its beginnings, Tahoe has always been a collective watering hole gravitating visitors of all sorts into its kidney-shaped orbit.

And with cyclists it is no different, Paco Lindsay knows.

Lindsay came to Truckee in 1978 and opened Paco's Bike and Ski out of his garage in 1979. The bike shop was one of the first in town.

There is nothing more interesting in the market today than the new engineering and use of materials in the road bike lines at Specialized Bicycle Company. The new Specialized Venge S-works is just another example of Specialized attempting to dominate road bike racing in the same way they already dominate mounting biking. The rate of development in road bicycle design in the past decade, even just the past couple of years, has been outright staggering, and one of the key topics is that of aerodynamics.
Firstly, such aero developments were seen solely on time trial bikes, but recently road bikes have been getting more aero, with examples like Cervelo’s S3 or Felt’s AR showing a new direction for road frames.
Until this week Specialized hadn’t moved their top-end road frames in that design direction, but with the release of the new Venge that has all changed. When Specialized decided to pen the new road frame, they paid a visit to McLaren F1, and together the two companies worked on developing the latest frame.
It’s touted as the “world’s fastest UCI-legal road bike” and taps into the vast knowledge the F1 team has acquired through competing at the sharp end of the most high-tech motorsport on the planet.

On America's bike trails, trail riders are now avoiding standard 26-inch-diameter bike tires they've all been riding for years in favor of oversize 29-inch wheels. Turns out bigger is definitely better, whether you've got years in the saddle or you're a mountain-biking rookie. Here are five reasons why 29ers have the edge:

Better Ride
"The larger wheels provide better cornering traction and help smooth out rough terrain," says 29er convert Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, 31, a veteran mountain biker with the Subaru/Gary Fisher team and five-time national cross-country champ. "Those are big confidence boosters when you're riding fast or on a trail you're not that familiar with."

More Speed
"You hold momentum much better than with a 26er," says two-time Olympian Todd Wells, who swapped to a 29er after racing a Specialized Stumpjumper with the larger wheels last year. "The bike excelled in fast conditions with lots of transitions and sweeping turns. The bigger wheels also allow you to descend faster and with more control—it almost feels like cheating," he adds with a laugh.

Versatility
Big 29-inch wheels make rear suspension a luxury, not a necessity—reducing a bike's weight and simplifying maintenance. "A hardtail [front suspension only] 29er can smooth out rough terrain almost as well as a 26-inch full-suspension bike while retaining the simplicity, stiffness, and handling of a hardtail," Wells says.

Greater Stability
For years, some racers avoided 29ers because they didn't excel on supertight, twisty, single-lane trails. Recent design refinements have corrected those problems. "Now the rider sits more between the wheels as opposed to on top of them—so cornering stability is a lot better than it used to be," Wells says. "The bigger wheels provide a more stable platform when going downhill; it's harder to accidentally crash and flip over the handlebars with them."

Accessibility
Just because the bike is bigger doesn't mean you have to be. Design tweaks keep the bikes accessible to all riders, not just those built like Shaq. "Tall people aren't the only ones who benefit from the big wheels," Wells says. "The U.S.'s Willow Koerber piloted her 29er to a bronze medal at the World Championships last year—and she's 5'2".

Specialized Bicycle Company has created an entire new category in the mountain bike world. For 2011 the all new Camber Mountain Bike comes with hydroformed M4 alloy frames and an integrated headset, 120mm of travel in the rear and 100mm in the forks.

The geometry will remind you of the Stumpjumper, but with a longer wheelbase. The Camber models offer pivot locations formed in tubes instead of welded separately.

Specialized Camber Elite does not include Brain technology set up on the shocks. This means that the price point will settle at entry level for trail bikes. Should you move up to the Camber Pro model, Specialized has added a SRAM 2×10 crankset with Shimano XTR 10-speed derailleur.

The 2011 Camber Mountain Bike line will include
a 29er version in keeping with Specialized's indication earlier this year that they see the 29'er category growing significantly in 2011.

Us Bike Dealers Test the NEW Specialized 2011 Camber and 2011 Stumpjumper

A gathering of 600 dealers were not dissapointed when they tested the Specialized 2011 line of bikes during a product launch in Colorado late last month. Seeing the awesome 2011 lineup encouraged bike shop owners in what has already been a good season for bike sales. Specialized introduced a new mountain bike called the Camber, which they call, "a pure XC trail bike," creating a hybrid of the Epic and the Stumpjumper FSR platforms. Generally, the pricing of the Camber will be just below the Stumpjumper line. But, even without a brain shock, the design is similar to the stumpjumper, with models varying as far as crankset and frame size.

The 2011 Specialized Camber, a mountain bike for mountain bikers, closes the gap in Specialized lineup, replacing the Stumpjumper FSR with 120mm of travel (100mm for 29er versions). Pro models have a custom SRAM carbon 2x10 crankset with Shimano XTR 10-speed derailleur. Lower models get triples.

The 2011 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR models see few changes save for a retuned S140 fork (26″) with no Brain inertia valve. The Fox shock trades Pro Pedal settings for a shock that’s designed around pedaling when on with multiple compression damping settings when turned off, In order to allow tuning of the shock's characteristics for descending more than climbing.

2011 Specialized Stumpjumper S-Works 29er Carbon

The Stumpjumper hardtails don’t see too many changes other than spec updates. Like the Epic, the S-Works models get carbon-rimmed Roval Control SL wheels, along with the more modern 2×10 drivetrain. The mid- and high-end models have stiffer wheels due to Specialized’s updated 90mm travel Future Shock with dropouts. These wheels are compatible with Specialized and Rockshox forks, and they have a OS24 caps in order to make them compatible with Fox forks.

The S-Works carbon frames weigh in 100g less than the 2010 model, at 1,055g for the 29er and 920g for the 26″ model. Shaped seatstays combined with a slim 27.2mm seatpost provide vertical compliance for both models. The 2011 Stumpjumper FSR and S-Works Carbon are great additions to the Stumpjumper line.

Specialized Allez Comp: Redisigned for 2011

If you are looking into an entry level racing bike, the Specialized 2011 Allez Comp is where you should start. Redesigned for 2011, the aluminum frame is shaped exactly like the Tarmac.

"After the Roubaix, the biggest news on the road side is the complete redesign of the Specialized Allez. The new frames are 20% stiffer…they have the same torsional stiffness as the Pro Tour-proven Tarmac SL3…and they get the same tapered headtube design on the Elite models with bearings set further up the steerer tube for enhanced stiffness due to increased surface contact area (details are a bit sparse on that aspect, we’re working on it). The seat tube gets butted, swaged and formed into a squared shape at the bottom bracket, strengthening one of the highest stressed areas on the bike.

Being Specialized’s competitive but affordable road model, the Allez comes with both high performance builds and one version with SRAM’s new performance touring compact double Apex group. In addition to the same stiffness as the Tarmac SL3, the new Allez shares its racy geometry. In this comparison, the gray is the Allez A1, yellow is the Allez E5 and the red is the Tarmac SL3."(BikeRumor)

Although the 2011 Tarmac SL3 doesn't come with Zertz inserts, it has a triangulated seat for stiffness and the geometry is aggressive. You can expect more confidence, better handling, and better power transfer from these features.

The key to stiffness is a bigger cross section in the fork with wider and stiffer blades.

Bikeradar says "Is it a case of stiffness that goes up to 11? Possibly, but again you can't argue with the results. Riders on board Tarmacs have won more than 25 ProTour races this year, and given that Alberto Contador, Fabian Cancellara, Frank and Andy Schleck will all race them at the Tour de France, there's no doubt the frame will enjoy more success."

Specialized 2011 Roubaix SL3: Responsive and Efficient

The 2011 Roubaix SL3 is a comfortable road bike at the top of the Specialized Endurance line that can race with the best of them, and yet versatile enough to be appealing to all riders.

Engineers have designed a frame that assists the bike to limit vibration and increase sticktion, which delivers a smoother and more efficient ride. And although Specialized has been using Zerts elastomer inserts for a while, they have been given a permanent home, securely placed in a nook of the seat stay. Specialized has included internal cable routing and boasts that the bottom bracket to chain stay is in one piece to increase the efficiency of power transfer.

Specialized has also taken responsiveness into consideration, and made sure to leave their “cobra” tube unchanged, which widens and drops into a fatter, tapered head tube for extra stiffness. They also offer a redesigned, stiffer fork with a two bladder molding style.

Not sure if you got the memo, but a bunch of us are getting together every Sunday afternoon and heading to the hills. The hills within 10 miles of Montrose Bike Shop that is. We have a mixed group including folks who have been or are serious riders (or even pro's), and we have beginners. No one gets dropped as this is a social ride.

We started this group and we dedicate it to those who plan to ride on Saturday and then again on Sunday morning, but all of a sudden it's Sunday afternoon and the weekend is almost over. So we might have named the group Last Chance, but we didn't.

Come join a bunch of riders who just love to get on a Mountain Bike. We'll pace the rides based on who comes out. We might even split into two groups if there some who want to go fast and some who want to, but can't yet. : )

Looking forward to seeing a big group every Sunday. Starting in June, the group will reconvene back at the shop for BBQ and Beer.

Tri Bike Likely to Beat All - Specialized 2010 Transition Review

All in all, Specialized has done a very nice job with the Transition. The frame is a little finicky, with proprietary brakes, and a seatpost that doesn't stick into the frame very far, so, you have to cut it. Woe unto you if you cut it too short. Then again, if you do cut it too short, you're cutting the seat post, not the frame (which is the case with Kuota's Kween K, Scott's Plasmas, Ridley's Dean, et al). If you do make a cutting mistake on the Transition Comp, it's a $200 problem, not a $2000 problem.

The bike handles nicely. Especially in its too largest sizes. It handles adequately well in its two middles sizes. I would forego the smallest size altogether, and the SM size might work better with the 49mm fork than with the stock 43mm fork (subject to much testing first!), but, really, the SM, MD and LG just all need a 46mm fork (a fork not yet made).

The bike is priced right, it's a formidable match for the other bikes in its competitive set, which would include the Slice 4, the P2, Plasma 30, Equinox TTX 9.0, and Felt's B12 and B14. Even as the UCI has turned up its nose at Specialized's Shiv, 2010 could be this company's breakout year as regards its timed race product line.

Thank you Specialized for allowing a rider to put his saddle where he wants it. [Digression] Here's a secret for all you bike designers out there: When you allow a rider input on his own position—when a fit session includes actually asking the rider whether he's comfortable and powerful—the rider, when given a legitimate, well-executed, choice in positions, will choose 79.5° of seat angle. This is the average. This is where the fat of the bell curve sits. [/Digression] So...

Here's a bike company that made a timed race bike to help in its quest for that elusive yellow jersey, nevertheless it thought enough about this bike's target market to allow customers the sit where they want. This, because the Transition Comp—and all the Transitions—come with one of three available seatposts.

The seatposts are named Team (way set back, without very much difference between it's two fore and aft positions); the Regular post; and the Straight post. These posts are each two-position posts, and, on the straight post, the center of the binder mechanism sits either 100mm behind the BB or 150mm behind the BB depending on whether the binder mechanism is in its fore or aft position.

The offsets are rational and thought-out. The swept back post (Regular post) has offsets of 160mm and 210mm. The Team post has offsets of 200mm and 225mm respectively.

Your safest bet is to get your Transition with a Straight post (you may well choose the rear position of the Straight post). But if you're a taller rider—riding the XL or XXL—you might need the Regular post, with the moderate backsweep. This, because the seatpost sticks straight up, at 90°, so, the taller the bike size, the nominally steeper the bike is already.

Not to beat on this subject too hard, but [Digression back on], how difficult is it to do what Specialized has done? Why can't bike companies who seek to sell to triathletes just take a digital level, pass it through both the bottom bracket and the center of the saddle's rails as the saddle is pushed all the way forward, and see if the first number is 8. It can be 80°, 80.5°, 82°, but, the first number needs to be 8.

It needs to be 8 as the saddle sits at a representative height from the pedals in each size, that is, it needs to adjust forward to 80° or steeper in the smallest size (when the top of the saddle sits 67cm from the bottom bracket axle), and in the largest size, when the saddle sits 85cm from the BB axle (and for every saddle height in between). Note to product manager (or engineer, or bike designer): if the first number on your digital level is a 7, go back to the drawing board. Literally. You can figure this out in SolidWorks, or, using a little junior class trig. This will save the trouble of wondering whether your design gets riders steep enough.
